MODIFICATION OF H.E.R.O. TIME AND PILOT SCHEDULE FOR 4TH QUARTER

The staff at LFMS is excited to announce that beginning 4th quarter, we will be adopting a new schedule that we are piloting for possible implementation next year.

We are modeling our pilot after a research based system that is already occurring at many of our district middle schools in similar forms.  Teachers and other staff members, as well as parents from LFMS have been to visit the program at another site to see how it works. Those schools that have implemented the program are seeing great success in academic performance, student confidence, and opportunities for students to choose new learning experiences.

The purpose of the new schedule is twofold:

  1. To make H.E.R.O. time more effective and helpful to your kids.
  2. To unify the students on campus through one lunch.

Changes for 4th quarter:

  • We are moving H.E.R.O. to after 4th period and renaming it B.E.A.R. time (Be Engaged And Responsible).
  • H.E.R.O. still applies to our PBIS program (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports).
  • Every teacher on campus will have a B.E.A.R. period every day. Our curricular departments will work together to create targeted instruction and extended learning opportunities for all students.  This will allow students, if they need assistance, to have guaranteed access to all of their teachers within the school day.
  • There will be one lunch for all students after B.E.A.R. time each day, which will allow 6th graders to now participate in ASB and other spirit activities with the entire school community.
  • Lunch lines, lunch seating areas, and lunchtime blacktop courts will be designated by grade level for organization purposes, and supervision at lunch will be increased for extra coverage.
  • Currently, the majority of CUSD middle schools operate with one lunch for all students.

There will be a presentation for parents on the details of the pilot on Open House night in the MPR at 5:30 p.m.  Hope to see you then!

MESA CENTER

Late Start Wednesdays

Parents: We have recently had reports from the merchants at the Mesa Center, as well as from community members, that LFMS students are hanging out before school on Wednesdays and leaving trash, congregating in large groups, and in one case, getting involved in a confrontation.  Please keep in mind that we highly discourage dropping students off at the Mesa Shopping Center, as there is no supervision, and safety is always our number one concern. Once students are dropped off on campus, they are to remain on campus.

Just a reminder that although we do not start school to 9:45 a.m. on Wednesdays, our Library is open at 7:30 a.m. to students every day of the week. We also have the before school YMCA (fee based program) available as well, if you need to drop your student off before 9:45 a.m.

Families will learn to teach their children how to communicate responsibly, understand real from fake in the face of phishing and scams, build strong passwords, be positive and kind online, and talk about questionable content with their family. The workshops will also give families the tools and resources to build healthy tech habits with the Family Link app from Google. Workshop attendees will receive free bilingual resources, answers to questions about online safety and digital citizenship, and tools and information to help facilitate discussions at home.

Let’s be safe, confident explorers of the online world together. We hope to see you there to get the conversation started! Onsite childcare and refreshments will be available. REGISTER TODAY

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Hi Volunteers!

We need coverage at the book fair coming up in February.   Would you please help out?

Basically you are a “Volunteer Monitor”. Monitoring includes: making sure students behave, no theft, no backpacks, and tidying book fair book shelves and tables, restocking if needed, and tidying up after each bell rings.

That’s it!  Easy relaxing 2 hours out of your day.

Sincerely,

Carna

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ‘ANCIENT WONDERS OF THE WORLD’ DAY

Good morning LFMS 6th Grade Families,

Looking to get involved with your 6th-grade student’s middle school experience?  Here is a great opportunity to do just that. Our Grade Social Science teachers are excited to announce that LFMS will be hosting its 5th Annual Wonders of the Ancient World Day on Wednesday, May 20, 2020.  This is a very entertaining and exciting fair complete with food and games that are offered for our sixth-grade students.  The students will be able to sign up for amusing rotations such as carving cuneiform in fudge, painting mandala rocks, designing Chinese knotted bracelets, building sugar cube pyramids, and participating in Greek Olympic Games & Circus Maximus activities, and learning the art of  Bollywood dancing. ! This event will be a very memorable occasion for your child, but it is a huge undertaking that can only be done with your help!

In order for this day to be a success, we need your help. We are currently looking for a HEAD Chair or Co-Chairs to lead and work closely with our LFMS 6th-grade team. In addition, we would like to have about 10-12 parent volunteers to head the different committees (rotations).  If you are interested in participating on a committee or have other family members that would like to get involved, we have a place for anyone who wants to be a part of this great day. Please email me as soon as possible. We will host our first committee meeting on Wednesday, February 5th at 8:15 A.M. in Mrs. McCusker’s Room (Room J103).

Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration!
